Pradosham Meditation

Pradosham Meaning: “Pradosham” is a daily 3 hour period, from 1.5hrs before sunset until 1.5hrs after sunset (~4.30 to 6.30pm). Pradosham is considered as one of the most auspicious time for meditation as day dissolves into night. Pradosham time is to Pray to Lord Shiva and invokes His Blessings. Praying in this time will free us from sins and gives Moksha (hence the name “Pradosham” – removal of sins).

Pradosham occurs during the two different phases of the moon (waxing and waning) as per the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. The Lunar days are called tithis and each month has 30 tithis. “Pradosham” falls on the 13th day/tithi (Trayodashi) of the lunar fortnight (Paksha). Trayodashi refers to the 13th day. Pradosham time on Trayodasi (the 13th tithi) is especially sacred, hailed for Siva worship and meditation.

Pradosham falling on a Monday is called Soma Pradosham or Chandra Pradosham, on a Tuesday is known as Bhauma Pradosham, and on a Saturday is called Shani Pradosham. Among all the Pradosham vrats, the Soma Pradosham and Shani Pradosham are the most significant ones.

Pradosham Significance: It’s said that Lord Shiva drunk the Halahala poison during Pradosham. On the Trayodashi day during the evening twilight, Shiva and Parvati are in a good mood. Hence, all prayers and grants demanded by a sincere and loyal devotee are easily fulfilled.

Offering Bael or Bilva leaves to Lord Shiva during this twilight period is regarded to be very fortunate.

Pradosham Abhishekam: During Pradosham time Abhishekam (or) anointing the Shiva deity with the following is considered fruitful.

Abishekam Material Effects
Ghee Gives Moksha
Milk Gives Long Life
Curd Gives Good Children
Honey Melodious Voice
