Father's Day

Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a day set apart to celebrate fatherhood, recognize the influence of fathers in our homes and society. It is a day to honor our fathers and forefathers. The inspiration for Father’s Day began with the earliest observances of Mother’s Day. It typically involves giving gifts, special dinners to fathers and family oriented activities.

Father’s day is celebrated in the U.S. on the third Sunday of June and the date varies in other countries.

Legend

It is believed that Father’s Day was first observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd, daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. Sonora’s mother died when she was age 16, and she wanted a day that would commemorate and honor fathers like her own dad, who had raised her and five other children. Once she began soliciting the idea of an official Father’s Day, she met some opposition but she persevered. A bill was introduced in Congress in 1913 and in 1916 President Woodrow Wilson tried to make it an official holiday, but Congress still resisted. After many efforts the battle continued, and in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson made a proclamation for the third Sunday of June to be Father’s Day. Finally, it was made an official national holiday when President Nixon signed a similar proclamation in 1972.

Significance of Father’s Day

Father is generally viewed as a provider and guide for children. It is a time to thank our dads and remind them we love them for all their unconditional love and affection. Honoring your father means to love and respect him. Children become closer to their dad by celebrating Father’s Day. Celebration of Father’s Day makes the children realize the important role their fathers play in their life. This helps them appreciate the selfless care and protection provided by their father. Common Father’s Day gifts include sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household maintenance.

Spiritual role of a Father

Father is the God-given spiritual head of the family. A father’s first responsibility is to acquaint his children with Scriptures. The means and methods that fathers use to teach God’s truth will vary. Fatherhood is about leading through example. Children look up to their father and by learning about God they will lead a good life no matter what challenges they face throughout their life.
